The Carmel School seeks to hire a School Counselor to join its incredible team of compassionate, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable faculty and staff for the 2023-24 school year. The School Counselor will lead and promote students' social and emotional growth, character development, and overall well-being in Kindergarten through 8th grade.

At The Carmel School, the School Counselor will be expected to:
collaborate with school administration (Head of Lower, Head of Secondary, and Director of Counseling) and staff to lead and promote the development of a positive student and school culture
develop and promote school programming around the social, emotional, health and well-being of our students
assist students with academic and emotional challenges, including crisis assessments
effectively communicate confidential information to various stakeholders
regularly lead individual and small group counseling groups, and classroom guidance lessons
lead small groups, workshops, and presentations to parents/teachers/students about relevant social/emotional topics
implement current best practices in school counseling and stay informed of local/regional counseling resources and professional networks
use data to jointly develop school counseling goals and responsibilities

Please also note that a Bachelor's and Master’s degree in counseling is required and certification (in content area) is preferred. All employees must complete a criminal background check upon their official start date.

Summary of Essential Position Functions:
Promote and model the policies in our Student Handbooks (code of conduct, basics of student behavior)
Cultivate and inspire a community of positivity, character education, and healthy communication
Coordinates 5th to 6th-grade transition activities with the Lower School
Coordinates 6th-grade Orientation activities
Administers Iowa Testing for students in grades 6 & 7
Provide individual and group counseling for students in grades K-8
Monitor student progress and communicate to necessary stakeholders
Provide classroom guidance activities with teachers on relevant topics to middle school students
Assist students with course scheduling
Assist new students with scheduling, shadowing opportunities, and orientation activities
Collaborate with the Admissions team on student placement
Serve on the Administrative Team
Serves on the school's Emergency Preparedness team and is a key behavioral threat assessment team member
Makes an effort to know every student and remains universally accessible
Consults, facilitates and maintains communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and staff while appropriately understanding confidentiality
