Music Teacher-Middle/Upper School (PT or FT)

The Carmel School seeks an inspiring music/theater educator for the 2024-2025 school year. The Music Teacher is a unique position at The Carmel School that involves teaching a variety of students of different ages and abilities. This position plays an integral role in the school’s development and appreciation of musical arts and instruction. 

The Music Teacher is responsible for developing students’ enjoyment, appreciation, and musical performance through various planned musical experiences, including singing, moving to music, playing instruments, listening, and other duties directly related to this job description. The ideal candidate will have experience and expertise in both musical and theatrical performing arts and be intimately involved in the instruction and development of school musical and theatrical or dramatic programs. This position involves teaching across the middle and upper school divisions, so the candidate will possess strong qualities of flexibility, adaptability, and organization.

At The Carmel School, our teaching faculty are expected to:

  • champion the role of independent schools in the greater Richmond/Fredericksburg area
Please also note that a Bachelor's degree is required, a Master's degree is strongly preferred, and certification in (content area) is preferred. All employees must complete a criminal background check upon their official start date.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaches general music, including harmony, appreciation, history, and ensemble across the school community.
  • Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, from traditional to contemporary to world, appropriate for student ages, skill levels, and developmental stages.
  • Provides opportunities for musical choir & musicals.
  • Plans, rehearses, and directs at least one annual student musical program for the school and the larger community.
  • Differentiate music curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the student body.
  • Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time to adequately and effectively prepare, rehearse, and instruct within the allotted time.
  • Develops and refines music curriculum.
  • Establishes and maintains student behavior standards to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.
  • Evaluate each student’s musical growth and contribution to group performance that allows everyone to contribute.
  • Communicate clearly with parents and school faculty/staff on the progress of individual students.
  • Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Cooperates with the Head of School and staff in providing musical programs for school assemblies, admissions events, parent meetings, seasonal and other programs.
Qualifications
  • Minimum B.A. in Music or Music Education is required.
  • The ability to work with musicians at all skill levels is required.
  • Strong instrumental skills, including piano accompaniment, are required.
  • Experience with theater or musical theater is strongly preferred.
  • Aspects of the position can at times be physically demanding, but reasonable accommodations may be available if requested in advance.
